Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Government of Canada announce funding for the Nipissing District Housing Corporation to reduce emissions and address urgent building renovations.
August 22, 2024

Today, Member of Parliament for Nipissing—Timiskaming, Anthony Rota, on behalf of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, announced a recipient of CMHC’s Affordable Housing Fund to address the critical need for safe and energy efficient housing projects in Northern Ontario.

The Nipissing District Housing Corporation, an organization that strides to provide safe and affordable housing to those who need it most, received $1,550,000 from CMHC. This funding will be put towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as increasing accessibility in buildings, which include 155 units identified for improvements..

The $1,550,000 confirmed in February 2024 for the NCHC is being used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by converting fuel burning heating systems to electric, as well as significant attic insulation upgrades to boost energy efficiency. Accessibility is being enhanced with the addition of more features for those who struggle with hearing and vision impairment, by adding strobes and voice commands to fire safety and building entry components. This work will also extend the life expectancy of some of NDHC’s housing stock, the oldest of which was built in 1966 and the newest in 1993.

CMHC contributes to the well-being of Canada's housing system by providing housing finance solutions and lenders reliable access to mortgage funding. Their commitment extends to providing crucial research and data to inform decisions for better housing sector outcomes, and they deliver housing programs for the Government of Canada.

The Affordable Housing Fund provides capital to partnered organizations for new affordable housing and the renovation and repair of existing affordable and community housing. Funds are provided as low-interest and/or forgivable loans and contributions.

CMHC funding will provide $10K per unit, for a total of $1,550,000 of contribution funding, with NDHC funding the balance of costs. (70% is covered by NDHC and 30% by CMHC)
