FedNor invests $57,500 to support youth and responsible forestry development in the Temagami First Nation and beyond
June 19, 2023

Today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Indigenous Services and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced a non-repayable FedNor investment of $57,500 to help the Daki Menan Lands and Resources Corporation (DMLRC) hire a youth intern to coordinate forestry related activities and help modernize a
community-lead forestry business in the Temagami First Nation.

Working as a Forestry Coordinator, the youth intern will support a variety of activities to help the DMLRC achieve its business goals. This includes preparing bids and proposals, GIS mapping, skills training for forestry crews, and project tracking and data management. The Forestry Coordinator will also support the organization’s tree planting, sawmill and firewood production operations, while working to improve the forests of Daki Menan, the traditional territory of the Temagami First Nation.

Providing opportunities for young graduates and connecting organizations and businesses with a skilled and enthusiastic workforce is precisely what this Government of Canada internship initiative is doing in Northern Ontario. Since its inception more than three decades ago, FedNor’s youth internship initiative has helped create more than 2500 jobs for youth in Northern Ontario.

Quotes

“FedNor’s youth internship initiatives have helped close to 2500 young graduates secure meaningful employment, allowing them to build their careers and raise their families at home in Northern Ontario. This $57,500 investment will allow the Daki Menan Lands and Resources Corporation to hire a youth intern as a Forestry Coordinator to maximize business and resource opportunities in the Temagami First Nation and beyond. I am pleased that FedNor stepped up to support this important project that will have far reaching social and economic benefits for all involved.”

“Providing talented young Canadians with on-the-job experience in their chosen fields is one of the many ways FedNor is helping stem the flow of youth out-migration in Nipissing-Timiskaming and across Northern Ontario. This priority project is an excellent example of Indigenous-led resource development that maximizes the inherent strengths of the region to support jobs, growth and the long-term prosperity of the Temagami First Nation. Congratulations to the Daki Menan Lands and Resources Corporation.”

“We are pleased this funding will allow us to hire a Forestry Coordinator intern to help modernize and advance our forestry operations. This strategic initiative will help us create local jobs, grow our economy and capitalize on opportunities identified in the Temagami First Nation’s Forest Strategy, including business growth and skills training for local youth.”
