Canadian Heritage funding supports two local museums
February 23, 2023

The Department of Canadian Heritage is investing $12,000 to help two local museums in their efforts to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Municipality of Callander – Callander Bay Heritage Museum and Alex Dufresne Gallery will receive $8,000 while the Mattawa Historical Society will receive $4,000.

The Honourable Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming says, “It is great to see these organizations in Nipissing-Timiskaming getting the assistance they need.”

He adds, “Museums and cultural groups have an important role to play in the economic recovery and vitality of our region. It is important for them to continue to see the support and commitment from the Federal Government so they can continue providing these important events and projects for the people of Nipissing-Timiskaming.”

Mayor of Callander Robb Noon says, “We are very grateful to have received this funding from the Museum Assistance Program Recovery Fund. Covid was a difficult time for everyone, including museums, and it has taken time to recover from the past few years. This money will help us with our day-to-day operations, as well as upgrading aspects of our collection storage system such as shelving and storage materials. We are thankful to be a recipient of this grant and this support will allow us to continue to provide our guests with a memorable experience, and to continue to preserve and maintain the history of Callander and the Dionne Quintuplets.”

Judy Toupin is the Curator of the Mattawa Museum. She says, “The Mattawa Museum is grateful for this funding. While we are still in recovery mode, we are moving forward by bringing some new and innovative projects to our 2023 season. This funding will go towards updating and refurbishing one of our exhibit areas with new graphic design elements and accessibility features. This a special surprise to open our 2023 season.”

The Museums Assistance Program (MAP) supports heritage institutions and workers in the preservation and presentation of heritage collections. The program fosters the preservation of Indigenous culture and facilitates access to heritage collections for all Canadians. It also promotes professional knowledge, skills and practices related to key museum functions.

The MAP provides funding to Canadian museums and related institutions through several components, and each has its own eligibility criteria.
