Investing in Nipissing-Timiskaming to respond to the impacts of COVID-19
June 8, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the wellbeing of all Canadians including those in Nipissing-Timiskaming.

That is why the Government of Canada has been taking decisive action to support families, businesses, and communities, and continue to look ahead to see what more can be done in these unprecedented times.

$1,600,563.60 has been invested in joint funding for 11 projects in Nipissing-Timiskaming to improve community and municipal infrastructure.

The Honourable Anthony Rota, Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming says, “The residents of Nipissing-Timiskaming have been resilient through this COVID-19 pandemic. As we continue to battle this crisis, we need to ensure that residents have access to safe and inclusive municipal infrastructure. I’m happy to see the Government of Canada making these investments in the communities in our riding.”

The Government of Canada is investing over $1.2 million toward these projects through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The Government of Ontario is contributing $320,112 to the projects.

In North Bay, three separate projects will benefit from $876,606 in total funding. Those projects comprise of new sidewalk connections on Lindsay Street, Johnstone Road and Oak Street.

Funding will also be used to construct two multi-use outdoor recreation courts at North Bay’s waterfront.

And there will be Repairs, Retrofits and Upgrades made to the City Hall building, including installing security cameras.

Five communities in the south end of the riding will receive a total of $444,200. Those projects include the construct a new sidewalk along Turcotte Park Road in Mattawa.

And roof and siding replacement work at the Public Works Garage in Calvin Township.

As well, three projects in the north end of the riding will receive a total of $279,757.

Those projects include retrofitting the Temagami Community Centre by installing energy efficient lighting, insulation, and new air purification systems.

Completing a 450m extension of the existing multi-use pathway for the STATO Trail within the City of Temiskaming Shores.

And upgrading the IT infrastructure at the wastewater treatment plant in Latchford.

Rota says, “By investing in infrastructure we can create jobs and build stronger, more resilient communities. The upgrades announced today will help build the future we want tomorrow."

The COVID-19 stream, implemented in response to the pandemic, allows Government of Canada to invest up to 80% in projects that support provinces and up to 100% in projects that support territories and Indigenous communities in their response to the pandemic.

Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities. Ontario is investing $10.2 billion in this program.
